MISCELLANEOUS

THE VESTA - The brig Vesta, from Hamburg, with cargo and passengers, arrived yesterday after a passage of 110 days. A fatal accident occurred on board to a child, when off the Cape of good Hope, in consequence of some passengers removing the covering of the hatch during a gale, which falling between decks unfortunately came in contact with a child, who died from the injuries it sustained. The Vesta is a very fine brig, and quite new.

A NEW LIFE IN AUSTRALIA

HILSENITZ, Friedrich. born 1823 Mittwalde, Brandenburg, Prussia. Settled in Flaxman Valley with wife and son, where he farmed for the rest of his life. A keen supporter of the Eden Valley Lutheran Church. Died 1896. Wife, Dorothea, nee Kroschel. Son August became a Flaxman Valley District Councillor.

RATTEI, Erdman (1824 - 1893) & Gottfried (1813 - 1901). Born Nekla, Prosen, Prussia. Farmed at Hoffnumgsthal and then South Rhine. Off Russian descent, they lived in a very unsettled portion of Europe and fled with their remaining two brothers to S.A. after a fifth had died from a sniper's bullet in a Polish uprising against their Prussian rulers. A niece, Caroline (later Mrs. Friedrich Herbig) came with them. Erdmann farmed at Black Springs; Gottfried at Flaxman Valley. Erdmann Rattei bought many blocks in Springton during the 1860s - 1870s.

1. 1 C.L. (Commerzlasten) was 6000 Hamburg pounds or about two English tons.

2. These dimensions are respectively the length of the deck from stem to stern, the width of the hold at the widest point, and the height from the deck planking to the keelson. The measurements are given in Hamburg feet - 1 Hamburg foot = 286 mm whereas 1 English foot is 305 mm. 12 inches(") - 1 foot(').
